Irvington Halloween celebrations underway in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — The Irvington neighborhood on the east side of Indianapolis continued its week of Halloween festivities Friday night with the annual Zombie Bike Ride, a 4-mile ride around town with about 500 cyclists.

The Zombie Bike Ride was the final event before the street fair, the finale of the 80th Historic Irvington Halloween Festival.

Many cyclists dressed up for the ride or decorated their bikes for Halloween. Irvington residents Nacho and Ashley Beck look forward to the ride each year.

“It’s wonderful, brings everybody together,” Nacho Beck said “Just get a bike and have some fun!”

Ashley Beck said, “I feel like, especially since stuff closed down years ago, it’s really good to see everybody close and enjoying the outside, making memories again.”

Festival Director Carrie Yazell said the fun would continue at 10 a.m. Saturday, when the neighborhood hosts a street fair with more than 200 vendors, two live stages, two beer gardens and costume contests. A parade featuring the contest winners, floats and more will step off at 3:30 p.m.

A recent addition to Irvington is Indianapolis’ first designated outdoor refreshment area, which allows visitors to take designated alcoholic beverages outdoors when they buy them from select restaurants and bars.

“It’s going to make things a little easier and bring more action to the businesses here in Irvington,” Yazell said.

About 200 volunteers will be on Washington Street as early as 4 a.m. Saturday to prepare for the street fair.

“We will be up before the crack of dawn getting ready, barricades out,” Yazell said. “We have IMPD (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) partnering with us to close all the streets down. We’ve got people setting up signs and detour things. We’re ready.”
